Dens can be made anywhere and with anything (almost), making them an exciting indoors or outdoors activity that’s well-suited to the unpredictable British climate. Eden Project has lots of ideas on particularly useful materials for making shelters but ultimately it’s up to the children to discover what and who can make the best den.

Sending post can be just as fun as receiving it. Children can practise writing out addresses and messages to friends and family by sending postcards from special places they’ve visited during their holidays. If they’re feeling particularly creative they could even design the front of their own postcard. Don’t forget the stamp!

It might be the holidays but there are still chores to be done. Pocket money is a great incentive to get children involved with the housework and learn to budget. How much did they earn? What can they buy? Can they afford that new toy or do they need to save for their holiday?
