Reading at school

In Year 3 (P4 in Scotland), your child will be expected to start reading fluently, tackling longer and more complicated books, and to start developing their own reading interests and opinions. For more information, have a look at our guide to reading in Year 3 and 4.

Tips to support your child at home

How can you effectively support your child at home? Here are a few tips and ideas to help your child get the most out of their reading:

  • Try increasing the time you set aside for reading with your child up to thirty minutes, or longer if they wish.
  • Offer to help your child read more difficult books, and books in different genres.
  • Talk about the books you read together, and about the books you yourself are reading. Get your child to make links between their own experience and the books they are reading, whether fiction or non-fiction.
  • For more advice, take a look at our page on building independence as a reader, or buy our book, Helping Your Child to Read , specifically created to support learning with Read with Oxford.
