Stage 6: Introduction

Read with Oxford Stage 6 is for children who reading confidently, silently and independently. They will have a greater understanding of what they are reading, feel comfortable tackling longer books in one sitting and will enjoy books of different genres. If you're not sure that your child is ready for Stage 6, try our simple test.

What children can usually do at Read with Oxford Stage 6:

• Read silently and quickly most of the time. They can use their knowledge to help them tackle unfamiliar words.
• Automatically read a wide range of common tricky words like ‘people’, ‘friend’, ‘through’.
• Notice and correct (rare) mistakes when they do make them.
• Comment confidently on characters, story and plot, and express reasoned opinions on fiction and non-fiction.
• Comment on an author’s style and use of language, e.g. using short sentences to create excitement.
• Make completely independent choices about what to read.
• Read at least two or more chapters of a Stage 6 book in one sitting, and feel keen to attempt longer books.
