Stage 4: Introduction
Read with Oxford Stage 4 is for children who are beginning to read with more confidence. They are often able to use the phonics they have learned without being reminded, and they are starting to feel more comfortable reading by themselves. If you're not sure that your child is ready for Stage 4, try our simple test.

What children can usually do at Read with Oxford Stage 4:
- Apply their phonics knowledge automatically, without sounding words out or needing help.
- Read a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar words, including most common tricky words.
- Choose whether to read silently or aloud. They can often read aloud with expression, taking note of punctuation.
- Notice their own mistakes when reading and correct them.
- Talk about what they have read with growing confidence and independence, expressing opinions.
- Select their own books to read, based on the cover and blurb.
Stage 4 has been developed to support your child as they reach the end of their formal phonics teaching at school, using simple sentence structures and familiar language but introducing more detailed plots.
