Age 6–7: Advice and activities

We’ve put together some advice and activities specifically designed to help children using Progress with Oxford . Read on to discover what learning your child is likely to be introduced to in Year 2 and how you can support your child’s new skills at home, download free activities, and much more.

Learning at school

Year 2 is an important stage of your child's primary school experience. It is the end of key stage 1, and is marked by end-of-year attainment tests known as SATs.

This year, your child will be encouraged to work more independently. At this age, most children will have improved their ability to coordinate movement and their language/speech will be increasingly complex and grammatically correct, so it’s an exciting year for children, parents and teachers.

Tips to support your child at home

How can you effectively support your child at home? Here are a few tips and ideas to help your child as they make the step up to Year 2:

  • Play word and spelling games like Junior Scrabble, Bananagrams and Boggle to focus on blending letter sounds to make words. There are lots of free literacy and maths games on our kids' activities for age 6–7 page.
  • There are some beautiful and interesting picture books for this age group that could help engage less confident readers, as well as being fun for bookworms. Don't forget that comics and graphic novels are great for encouraging reading too. Take a look at our picture books for older readers blog post for some ideas.
  • Build your child’s confidence in mathematics by talking about and using maths together. You could measure ingredients for recipes, look at the clock and talk about the time, or discuss how much things cost when out shopping. Including maths in your everyday routine is great practice, and it also shows your child why maths is so important.
